Classic
Hatha Yoga
Classic Hatha Yoga is a traditional approach to
the practice of yoga asanas. Along with deep deliberate abdominal breathing,
asanas or postures are the basis of a hatha yoga practice. Each pose
in itself is a study; bringing the practitioner present in body awareness,
specifically creating more opening into deeper and stronger poses through
alignment principles, breathing practices and repetition. The practice
of yoga asanas is a continual unfolding experience; as the body shifts
and changes, along with breathing, clearer focus, strength and intent
brings greater alignment, form and balance. Poses are placed together
in a variety of sequences, designed for specific purposes of opening
varies parts of the body. As physical and emotional tensions are released
and inner focus developed, freedom from stress and worry is attained
and organic states of peacefulness and calm are realized. All classes
unfold in this manner, leaving one stimulated, open and consciously
aware of inner peace and quiet connection. Classic Hatha Yoga is practiced
by continuing students as well as those new to yoga.
Hatha
Yoga Anusara
Anusara
yoga, developed by John Friend, is an evolving practice rooted in the
life affirming philosophy of Tantra. Blending powerful alignment principles
with the qualities of the heart, Anusara yoga celebrates the gift of
life. Playful and challenging classes help you to find your own creative,
artistic expression as you practice. Building a strong foundation for
ultimate freedom, Anusara classes can help take your practice to new
levels!
Ashtanga
Based Yoga
The Ashtanga Yoga based classes taught at LYC are
based on the teachings of K. Pattabhi Jois, who has taught this form
of yoga for decades, and was instrumental in bringing it to the USA.
Traditionally, Ashtanga Yoga is taught in series, the most commonly
practiced being the Primary and Secondary Series. Usually it takes two
hours to practice a series, which is a set of asanas (postures) that
are strung together in a specific sequence and flow pattern. They begin
with sun salutations, followed by a series of standing postures, then
a series of postures on the floor, followed by a relaxation at the end
(savasana). The poses are practiced in a heated room (about 85 degrees
Fahrenheit), are vigorous, and promote heat in the body which creates
more flexibility and cleansing. This practice is quite vigorous, and
should only be attempted by continuing students or people who are already
in good shape.
(To find this class, please look for the Vinyasa Flow classes on our
schedule.)
Vinyasa
Flow Yoga
Vinyasa flow is a vigorous style of yoga in which asanas are sequenced
together without interruptions. This type of practice builds internal
heat, which helps to open up the body and breath, to make it more flexible
and deepen your practice. It is intended for students who are already
familiar with most of the asanas and alignment principles, and who wish
to build stamina and endurance with their yoga practice.
Asana,
Pranayama & Meditation
This class includes one hour vigorous vinyasa flow, followed
by pranayama and meditation.
The asana and pranayama (controlled breathing) prepares your body and
mind for a
wonderful meditation.
Prenatal
Yoga Class
A personalized class for pregnant women who are looking to prepare the
body for childbirth. In this special class, the emphasis is on opening
the body through basic asana that gently stretch and relax the body.
No prior yoga experience.
Core
Focus
is a class combining yoga and pilates. The pilates method was developed
in the early 1900's by Joseph Pilates, who later brought it to the U.S
and opened his first studio in 1926. Like yoga, pilates mat-work is
a total body conditioning method. It incorporates dynamic, continuous
movement patterns with a breathing method focusing on stabilizing and
strengthening the body's center, or "core", along with upper
and lower body strengthening, balance, and flexibility. Combining both
the different and similar aspects of yoga and pilates make this a fun
and challenging class!
